Tobey

My 8.5 year old chocolate lab is acting strangely. He is just not himself. He is usually very jovial and energetic and lately he is pretty darn mopey. Oh and there is the hacking cough in the middle of the night and diarrhea this morning....something is up with the guy. I am not sure if he is:

a) just under the weather
b) sick because he is full of greasy sludges from our grill drip pan, where I have caught him feverishly licking a few times this week.
c) just becoming an antisocial rickety old man

Tell me dog lovers, how did your dog age? What did you notice as the years passed?

Aww, hi Tobey! Sounds like he is a little sick. Could be nothing, really, but I'd watch him and go the vet if you are still worried.
Doggie aging is more abrupt than human aging, but not THAT abrupt.

Get well soon, pup!

The cough and the diarherra worry me, I would take him in. Did you change his food or take him anywhere odd lately? I would rule on the side of caution and take him in to make sure he isnt sick. Sorry, don't mean to stress you.

My dog is 10 and has just slowed down a bit. Sleeps a lot more, his spazzy times are shorter.

My dogs are 9. One is much calmer these days.

The other one was gotten downright possessive. She no longer likes to share her futon or blanket with her brother. She also decides not to eat at least once a day.

It sounds to me like Tobey is probably sick. Make sure he is getting lots of fluids and maybe take him to the doc. I hope he gets better.

Since he's a lab I would guess option b.

Hope Tobey is feeling better soon!

My dog aging stories are not encouraging at all. With my little scottie/schnauzer mix, Pippen (my first pet who was with me with for 6 short years), she started acting lethargic and wouldn't eat. Two weeks later, she was gone (pancreatic cancer). It wasn't fair. She went from sprightly young dog to gone in a matter of days. She was only 8.

With B's lab/collie mix, Bandit, we did get to see him age a bit more, but it started sooner than we expected. He just slowed down (40 fetches of the ball turned into 20 and then 5 before he would lie down panting). He started having joint problems and then over time, his body just shut down. We lost him at 8 years also, a year after Pippen. Either way, it is hard to watch and all you can do is take care of them to the best of your ability.

Awww, what a sweetie. I have a soft spot for all things chocolate. Esp. labs.

Gus will be 14 this fall and every day at this point is literally a gift. We notice that he ages a lot each winter, so I'm kind of dreading this one.

However, get him around water or bread - really, his two favorite things - and he acts like he is 5 again.

Hope your baby is feeling better.
