I am supposed to be registering this weekend because shower invites are headed out in a week or so. I thought I would be good at that part of this journey. I always research and prepare for everything in my life and I imagined this would be no different. Well this is hard, incredibly hard. While I should be figuring out which car seat to buy and which bottles to use, I have resorted to being a pretty aimless shopper. You see, I have dreamed of this baby for so long and I imagined all of the "gear" would just fall into place. I find myself dreaming and preparing in many other ways for this little man's arrival....in fun ways.
My thoughts are not on the carseats or playmats. Instead I have bought a tiny gray elephant with an adorable face and trunks what will surely be chewed. My thoughts do not go the bedding or fussing over an organic mattress, instead I am hunting for the perfect CD player for your bookshelf and already adding to my collection of music we will be caught dancing to many times. I have not decided on which pocket diaper. I actually spend most of my days looking for the perfect books, ones that tell you a story and leave your heart and mind full.
But tomorrow we will spend some time at the big baby store registering, surely my husband will be pressuring me to just decide already. I imagine it will be pretty stressful but if I can get through it, I can then go back to finding the perfect accessories to my dream.

Best of luck to you on the journey of registering. It is quite an odd experience, but one that you will be thankful for in the long run. I hope tomorrow proves to be a non-stressful event for you.
*Those accessories are just as important as the big stuff, and what makes your dream your own. :)
registering was much more stressful than I could have anticipated. The gear will all eventually fall into place. Baby's don't need that much and you can always get what you need as you go along. The music, the elephant, the dreams you are preparing right now are the things that will hold your hope and your love and will really matter when the little man arrives. I wish I had let myself indulge in more of those things rather than trying so hard to be prepared and practical (which is so not like me anyway) - I would love to hear some of the books and music you are buying / dreaming about.
I used the book Baby Bargains to help us register, and it was soooooo helpful and took a lot of the guesswork out of registering. Also, we did almost all of it online, making it much less stressful (plus I could see reviews before adding the item to the registry). Just a thought...we just added things like towels and boppy covers when we went to the big baby store.
I like the accessories to the dream better, too.
A couple of days ago I saw a display honoring the anniversary of "The Very Hungry Caterpillar." Now it's all I can think about when talking about buying baby stuff.
To be honest, no matter how many reviews or books you read, no one is going to like exactly the same things you do. The stuff will fall into place.
I like that you picked out an elephant, I guarantee you will smile when you see your son with that toy.
Oh, and skip the organic mattress. My sister works for an organic mattress company and says it is silly to get one for an infant.
you'll figure it out. then the baby won't like or use half of the stuff anyhow:)
and if you are going with pockets, I like the bumgenius... but don't buy too much of any one diaper till you try em on the kid. too much money to put out then find out they don't work well. we do a combo or prefolds with im.se vi.mse covers, growing greens and bumgenius. and we use nature babycare for a disposable. diapers are fun!!!
I hear Britax car seats are the best, although pricey they last the whole life of the kid until they start driving themselves ;) I would have gotten them but they don't fit on a double stroller. :)
I agree with everyone else. Just ask around and soon enough you'll have the basics. I agree books and music are much more fun to dream about! Please share what you find!
That is a huge step -- and you are doing it.. Good luck with the registery. I know its hard there is a lot of stuff out there. Just keep in mind what you think you want your little guy may not. Try not to stress out about it -- let it be one of the times you enjoy. I will make a couple of suggestions watch Gerber onesies - they run small, additionally there are some great CD's for music.
They are called "Rockabye Baby Lullaby" (there is the Eagles, Beatles,Pink Floyd, Led zepplin, ac/dc, Bob Marley, Green day, U2 etc). They are great. They are the artist songs redone to soft music..
I, too, use the BumGenius 3.0 and like them a lot.
Check out Putumayo for great music to dance to!
I found registering utterly terrifying and I even like to shop. I made myself by a pack of kimono-type onesies, and that was all I could do for a long time.
