Accessorizing my Cervix

I need some birth control. I have not had a menstrual cycle since the beginning of March and have been on large doses of Lupron prior to my surgery to deplete my uterine lining and bloodflow. I am on hold until I have at least three menstrual cycles to assure my lining gets back to normal, and since I do not see AF in sight at all....we are on hold until at least October if she swings by in July. I do not want to use any type of hormonal birth control.

My OB nurse thinks a diaphragm is the best option for me at this point. I can see how galactorrhea, past problems with BCPs and a "hx of infertility" would get her to that conclusion, instead of going on the pill. But really....a plastic dome filled with spermicide that I have to leave in for 6-12 hours (!) that is only 80-85% effective? I guess I will take it. There are three varieties: flat, coil, or arcing spring. Don't they sound like mattresses?

Seriously though, if you have used one of them is the past, please pass along any tips or cautions you have because they have always been my absolute last contraception choice.

Okay, gotta ask, why the birth control? Isn't that kind of going against what you are trying to do? Or am I missing something. Sorry, not trying to be nosey or anything.

I have no experience with diaphragms (mainly for the reasons you noted) -- sorry. When we were on hold, we went with the tried and true condom + spermicide method.

Ok... here goes... I used a diaph. years ago. Until... I couldn't get it out. Back then I thought, there really is nothing more humilating than having your BF fish around in your hoo ha for said device. So I swore them off forever.

After all the IF treatments though, I don't really think that is the most humilating thing anymore.

My advice: Condoms. I know I know they are horrid, but until you and your ute are ready, you dont want to go the hormone route.
We bought a huge box of variety condoms, thinking how much fun it would be to experiment and feel like teenagers again. Sadly, we didn't use as many as I had plans to... want me to send you the rest? hahaha I kid.

Oh...I'm no good for advice either. I am a condom girl. Not the greatest but quick and easy!!!

Diaphragms...ew. I tried to get one one time. I sat in an exam room for 45 minutes by myself trying to get one IN. I couldn't do it. It was the nastiest, slimiest thing I could imagine (at the time), and that was WITHOUT having sex. Sorry to be graphic. Even the nurse said that they are gross and taking them out needs to be done in a bathtub to reduce grossness. I find abstinence a much better alternative!

Yeah, what about condoms? Is that even a choice? I've never used a diaphram before but they sound horrid!

I used a diaphragm for several years -- and actually really liked it. Also, it seemed kind of cool and "retro" at the time.

A big benefit is it holds back your period for sex, which is kind of nice. If you're prone to UTIs, however, it might not be a good choice.

You'd think barrier methods would've come further at this point, though...

I used a diaphragm last year while waiting for 3 normal cycles. It's not that bad, but can be frustrating to insert. Be careful it doesn't pop out of your hand and into the toilet. Also if it's in wrong you will know right away. It feels like a tampon gone wrong. Overall not that bad.

lol. It does sound like matresses!

No experience. It was condoms or the IUD for me.

I'm wishing you all the best. We went the condom/spermicide route because I couldn't even imagine putting one in me.

i used a diaphragm exactly once and ended up with both a yeast and bladder infection. if you are prone to either, i'd seriously consider using condoms...

good luck...

Diaphragms must be fitted and then refitted for size if you have a weight loss of greater than 10 pounds. They can and do slip out if you have lost weight which can lead to unintended pregnancy. Not exactly what you need in your current situation.
We have 2 kids 14 months apart in age due to this fact.
