K folks, if you use cloth diapers...which detergents do you use. I am thinking Seventh Generation baby for both clothes and diapers. Any suggestions and tips would be useful.

This is what I would have used if I'd known about them. I LOVE SoapNuts for washing my kids' stuff. So gentle and effective, natural and eco-friendly, too.

Can't help you w/ the cloth diapers, but I have heard of people drying them in the sun.
Meg -- good luck with the little guy.
We use Purex Free and Clear for diapers and baby clothes (and our clothes now too) and haven't had problems. Pinstripes and Polka Dots gives it 4/5 stars (tied for its highest rating for a detergent available at the grocery store). We may at some point switch to something that will require us to go to the cloth diaper store or Whole Paycheck (or order online), but have yet to make that commitment. We do a cold prewash with 1/2 the recommended amount of detergent, then a hot wash with a second rinse, also with 1/2 the recommended amount of detergent. We defy the diaper people and don't separate our diaper types (mixing pockets and inserts and prefolds and covers). We also dry almost everything in the dryer (since the weather up until recently would not have been line-dry friendly, and now we're in the eco-unfriendly habit -- ugh).
If you go with Seventh Generation, the site linked above recommends using the Delicate Care (*not Baby*) for dipes.
We use Arm & Hammer for sensitive skin and are happy with it. My cousin uses Planet and likes it. This chart (and this site) is really helpful: http://www.pinstripesandpolkadots.com/detergentchoices.htm
We use soapnuts for our clothes and diapers, and they go a long long way. I can reuse them when I wash our clothes in cold water, like three or four times! And they work great on the dipes as well. I have a new wash routine I really love and will gladly share with you if you are interested! :)
I also use the Purex Free & Clear for diapers and clothes.
We use the dryer for clothes but hang all of our diaper stuff (especially the stuff with velcro) on a wooden drying rack in our kitchen. It hopefully will help them last longer than if put through the heat of the dryer.
Ask around because some detergents will work better in different types of water. I asked at a nearby diaper store and even though they sold all the natural brands, they still recommended Purex F&C with the water around here.

We use our regular detergent (am outside of the US so brand not relevant) for everyone and everything, never use as much as the box says anyway. And we usually line dry in the sun.
I don't use cloth diapers (yet) but one of my best friends has three kids 5 and under and she does. She uses Charlie's soap, and you can buy it and all other cloth diapering things on www dot kellyscloset dot com. She swears by the stuff.
If you can master cloth right out of the gate, good on ya. But I wouldn't put too much pressure on yourself- I was SO sure I'd have C in them right away, but everything gets so overwhelming. One more learning curve still seems over my limits right now!
We use All free and clear- for a front loader. Top loaders are better for diaper washing though. Here is a useful list:

I have only recently had some trouble with build up and smell. You just have to try new approaches.
good luck!
all free and clear. have also used walmart cheapy detergent and cheer. All work fine. No reactions on baby and no loss of absorbancy. i've found the trick for cleaner diapers is to wash fewer at a time and to hang them in the sun.
again, I find myself perusing your old posts of when you were as far along in pregnancy as I am. It's giving me encouragement. I'm going into my docs tomorrow for my first freak out intermitten appointment session. Wish me luck.
Sorry to be late on this. We used Seventh Generation baby for the diapies and all baby clothes. When Missy turned 1, we switched everyone and everything to Seventh Generation Free & Clear with no problems. I have also heard that if you put vinegar in the fabric softener slot (as much as it will hold), it helps restore the pH balance for the diapies. I have not tried this yet but am going to tomorrow when I wash the diapers again. I have also heard the Charlies is great for diapers. Again, trying a sample tomorrow.
